Each year as our community marks the tragedy of the Holocaust during Yom HaShoah, members of the community, led by our Hillel students, commemorate those who lost their lives with a “Reading of the Names.” During this powerful and sobering event, volunteers gather on the steps of the Ramsey Library on the UNC-A Quad to read aloud the names of those who perished during the Holocaust. The reading begins in the morning and continues uninterupted until about 5:30pm.
In years past, Hillel students have organized this event. This year the Reading of the Names will take place on Thursday April 16th from 8:30am-5:30pm. This date falls the end of the semester, which is heavy with testing. The Center for Diversity Education, led by Peace Studies intern, Emma Anderson, has generously agreed to help plan this year’s reading.
We are looking for volunteers to help read. Please consider taking a 15-minute shift. We have set up an online sign-up using Doodle. You can access the schedule and sign up for a slot by clicking here. For more information, please contact the Center for Diversity Education at 828.232.5024.
Please help us continue this very important tradition. With today’s rise in anti-semitism across the globe, and even here in America, it is more important than ever that we publicly pledge “Never Again.”
